The Pencil tool creates open-ended lines. To create a closed shape with your path, press
Option/Alt before releasing the mouse button at your original starting point.

10. Use the Selection tool to select all three shapes of the icon art. Change the
fill color to black and the stroke color to None.

the inner shape at the
top of the flame.
11. Choose Object>Compound Path>Make.
This option combines all three selected shapes into a single shape; the area of the smaller
shape is removed from the larger shape behind it.
Note:
A compound path is
a single shape made up
As a compound path, the
inner shape is removed of more than one path.

have inner “empty” areas,
such as the letter O or Q.
